ROCKWALL — The inaugural running of The Patriot Half Marathon in Rockwall has been termed a success, and the man behind the Patriot dream already is looking forward to the 2013 Memorial Day event.
Barrett Hopper said an eight-year-old dream became reality Monday with the half marathon, 5k race and one mile fun run.
Hopper, owner of Rockwall Running Center and coach of the Rockwall Running Club, said the running events attracted 1,420 registrations, including about 900 runners who signed up for the challenging half marathon event.
Proceeds from the event will benefit about a dozen charities. One recipient is the family of Nate Oxford, a 6-year-old Fate youngster battling cancer. The 5k race was named in his honor, the Race for Nate.
“We are already making plans for 2013,” Hopper said in an email to runners who pre-registered for this year’s event. “We have gotten quite a bit of feedback on things that went well, things we can do better and things you would like to see. We appreciate the advice and comments. We will be incorporating many of them in 2013, along with some surprises that will amaze you.”
In the 5k race, Andrew Dealy of Denton was the first-place finisher. His time was 19:34. The top female finisher was 13-year-old Bailey Miley of Heath. Her winning time was 24:37.
